Denis Bowen was born in, South Africa and educated in England. He studied at Huddersfield School of Art and following war service in the Royal Navy, at the Royal College of Art. Denis Bowen became one of the chief proponents of tachist abstract art and was always at the cutting edge of experimental art throughout his life. He introduced a huge array of artists though the New Vision Centre Gallery that he founded in 1956 .In the 1990's Bowen undertook a series of works based on Lava. His work has been exhibited widely throughout his career and is held in numerous public collections, including the TATE, the V&A. Last year there was a retrospective of Denis Bowen's work which will move to Halifax this year (2015).
