 Fred Uhlman (1901 — 1985)
Fred Uhlman is such an interesting chap. Born in Stuttgart , the home of Porsche cars, this German Jew studied law in his country of birth before relocating to Paris in 1933 fearing the persecution of those of the Jewish faith. It was in Paris that he started to paint as he was unable to practice as a lawyer. Uhlman then moved to Spain but the civil war made him relocate again, this time to England .

Over the decades we have provided sanctuary to many in need and the influx of Jews from across Europe resulted in some fine artists adopting London as their home . We have a genuine interest and love of Jewish art and whether its the Whitechapel boys of the east end , Adler or Herman , Winsten or Klinghoffer we find we are always drawn to their work. Uhlman is no different .

Uhlman first exhibited at the Zwemmer Gallery in London in 1938 but exhibited all over the country during his lifetime including the Trafford Gallery in London W1. However in 1943, Uhlman and his family moved to Wales where his new surroundings proved to be of influence in his painting output with many of his most celebrated landscape works were produced during this time. Uhlman’s popularity as an artist grew steadily throughout his years spent painting in Wales, and the artist participated in several exhibitions throughout Britain in the years to follow.

Fred was also a great writer with his work ‘The making of and Englishman’ and novel ‘Reunion ‘ being most well known .

His work can be seen today in many public collections including the V & A Museum in London and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
