1942 - 2015

Roger Cecil has been described as “ an artists artist” , “a working class artist” and “the greatest abstract artist of his generation” . Furthermore when David Buckman compiled his publication Dictionary of Artists in Britain since 1945 he said , ‘ In nine years of gathering material containing over 10,000 names, he ( Roger Cecil ) remains the most impressive discovery’.

Roger Cecil produced a remarkable body of painting and he rarely exhibited so when he did private and corporate collectors snapped it up. Born in the Welsh valleys of South Wales into a mining family he was dyslexic , struggled at school but at the age of 15 went to Newport College of Art. In the 1960’s he was a star of his generation at the Royal College of Art , but walked out of his scholarship returning to Wales. A film made about him at the time by the BBC refers to him and is titled ‘ A quiet rebel’ .

His life and passion was Art but to allow himself to devote his life to painting he worked as a labourer, open cast miner and art tutor . When his parents died their house became his studio and the work he produced is nothing short of stunning.

The legend of Roger Cecil continues to grow and here at Blondes Fine Art in Hertfordshire we think it is time he became a bigger name than he already is.
