Philip sutton RA
Born 1928
Philip Sutton came from the generation that emerged from the Slade School of Art after the Second World War . He was a contemporary of Euan Uglow , Michael Andrew’s and Craigie Aitchison but is still exhibiting his work in major exhibitions as he approaches his 100th year.
Philip Sutton was one of four boys and with two of his brothers called Ronnie and Reggie there are no prizes for guessing where they grew up. Yes, the East End of London was from where the family hailed. Hs grandfather was a Latvian immigrant who anglicised the family name while his mother’s family were pawnbrokers in Whitechapel. Philips parents moved to Leyton where he spent a typically warm childhood of an extended Jewish family.
His time at the Slade exposed him to all of the great artists of the time both in the UK and on the near continent . He was interested in Matisse and developed a love of colour and worked out systems of harmony in both mood and colour to find unity and rhythm in his paintings.
His work is much loved by collectors and has stood the test of time over a 75 year career. He was elected as a member of RA in 1988.
