Who is Mali Morris RA?
Born in North Wales in 1945, Mali Morris studied Fine Art at Newcastle upon Tyne and subsequently completed an MFA at the University of Reading. Her career has included more than four decades of exhibitions, with her work shown at important galleries and institutions including the Serpentine Gallery, Ikon Gallery, Hayward Gallery, Barbican and Whitechapel Gallery.
Morris became particularly known for her highly developed approach to abstraction. Rather than relying on recognisable subject matter, her paintings explore the relationships between colour, shape, light and space.
The Royal Academy describes her concentrated compositions as engaging viewers with pure abstraction, with colour relationships creating luminosity and complex layers of space.
This combination of intellectual sophistication and visual energy has made Mali Morris’s work particularly appealing to collectors of modern and contemporary British art.
Do you own a Mali Morris painting you would like to sell?

Whatever the circumstances, obtaining an informed opinion about the work is an important first step.
At Blondes Fine Art, we are interested in buying Mali Morris paintings and original works of art from private collectors, estates and individuals looking to sell.

How much is a Mali Morris painting worth?
The value of a Mali Morris artwork can vary considerably depending on a number of factors.
These can include:
The title and date of the work
Whether it is an original painting, drawing or print
The medium used
The size of the artwork
The condition
Its provenance and exhibition history
Whether the work has been published or reproduced
Whether it has been included in significant exhibitions
The quality and importance of the particular work within Morris’s career
The current level of demand from collectors
It is important not to assume that every work by an artist has the same market value. Two works by Mali Morris can differ significantly in value depending on their individual characteristics.
Morris’s career has also encompassed printmaking as well as painting. The Royal Academy, for example, has offered a number of her screenprints, demonstrating the breadth of her artistic practice.
For this reason, an accurate valuation should always consider the specific artwork rather than relying simply on the artist’s name.
Selling a Mali Morris painting after an inheritance
We frequently hear from people who have inherited paintings and are unsure what to do with them.
If you have inherited a Mali Morris RA painting, you may have little information about when it was purchased, how much was paid for it or where it originally came from.
That does not necessarily present a problem.
Old invoices, gallery receipts, exhibition catalogues, correspondence and certificates can all be useful, but they are not essential in every case. Photographs of the artwork can often provide a useful starting point for establishing what you own and determining the next steps.
If the artwork forms part of an estate, we can also discuss the practical considerations involved in selling inherited artwork.
Mali Morris and the Royal Academy
Mali Morris’s status as a Royal Academician is an important part of her position within British art.
Her relationship with the Royal Academy has included exhibitions and presentations of her work. Her Banners for Bond Street were installed in 2022, accompanied by a print retrospective at the Royal Academy’s Keeper’s House. She also had a solo exhibition at the Tennant Gallery at the Royal Academy in 2019.
Her work is held in public and private collections internationally, further demonstrating the continuing interest in her career.
For collectors, this wider exhibition and institutional history can be an important consideration when assessing an individual Mali Morris artwork.
Why collectors like Mali Morris
One of the great strengths of Mali Morris’s work is its ability to reward repeated viewing.
Her paintings are not simply exercises in colour. Colour, shape, layering and space interact to create works that can appear different depending on the distance and light in which they are viewed.
Her influences are similarly wide-ranging. The Royal Academy notes connections with artists including Matisse, Hans Hofmann, Helen Frankenthaler and Milton Avery, alongside influences from earlier European art and Indian miniature painting.
This gives her work a distinctive position within British abstraction: sophisticated, colourful and contemporary, while also rooted in a much broader history of painting.
